Kids Eye Examination:

MSP covered annual eye exam are provided under the age of 19.

As any other medical procedure, an eye examination, can be daunting to a child the first time around, however we have made process easy and more fun for a child ensuring we get as much information as we can from their eyes.

All babies will have their eyes checked at birth and then six weeks later by family doctor.

According to a report, 1 in 5 children have an undetected eye problem. Needless to say, this can be very damaging to the child’s educational development, since 80% of what children learn is through vision. Quite often, children do not realise that there is a problem with their eye sight, which can develop into larger problems. Gradually, being unable to read what the teacher writes upon the board can start to cause a decline in learning, they can start falling behind in class, which can lead to emotional problems and sometimes even be misdiagnosed as learning problems.

This is why it is important to get your kids tested early, so that any potential problems can be identified and acted upon. It is also worth remembering that all children under the age of 19 are covered by MSP.

Signs of problems in children eye health

There are a quite a few signs in your child’s behaviour that could hint at problems with their sight.

  • Showing signs of Frustration in the learning environment.
  • Poor handwriting can be caused by poor hand-eye coordination.
  • Frequent squinting
  • Irritated eyes and excessive rubbing of the eye
  • Watery eye
  • Difficulty or inability to note text from the board at school.
  • Skipping words or whole lines of texts when reading or copying from the board.
  • Poor level of reading.

These problems can sometimes be misdiagnosed as dyslexia or other learning and mental problems. The fact is, eyesight is a person’s dominant sense when learning. If there is a problem in absorbing information, then there is likely to be frustration which may have further repercussions. Again, a single eye test would be enough to provide some insight

 Diabetic Eye Examination:

  • We provide MSP covered Eye Exam to all diabetic patients yearly or as recommended.
    • You can see an optometrist without a referral.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy can lead to poor vision and even blindness. Most of the time, it gets worse over many years. At first, the blood vessels in the eye get weak. This can lead to blood and other liquid leaking into the retina from the blood vessels. If you have diabetes, you are at increased risk of developing eye disease. However, there are measures you can take to help keep your eyes healthy.

You may have diabetic retinopathy for a long time without noticing any symptoms. Typically, retinopathy does not cause noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred and complications have developed.
Visual symptoms of diabetes include:
• Blurry vision and sometime double vision

Keep your  blood sugar levels within normal limits by eating healthy diet and daily exercise. Keep Annual Eye exams with your Eye Doctor to detect retinopathy as early as possible, so treatment can minimize damage.

Diabetic Retinopathy is monitored in the early stages with eye health examinations. Sometimes injections of an anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) medicine or an anti-inflammatory medicine help to shrink new blood vessels in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
