Eye Examination

Full eye examination consists of following: 1) Refraction & Visual Acuity: Enables us to obtain the proper prescription for your eyes. 2) Health Check: Complete examination of all parts of the eye. Specialized machinery is used to access the health of your eyes. Dilating drops are sometimes used to examine the internal components of the eye. 3) Tonometry: A diagnostic test that measures the fluid pressure (intraocular pressure) inside your eyes. This measurement helps us determine whether or not you may be at risk of glaucoma, a serious eye disease in which the intraocular pressure is increased. Annual eye exams for seniors (64+), children (18 or under), and diabetics are covered by MSP. For adults not covered by MSP, we direct bill most of the major insurance companies! It is very important to have regular eye exams regardless of your age or physical health so book now.

Senior Eye Examination

MSP covers the cost for an annual eye exam for seniors 65 and older. At age 65 and older, you should have a comprehensive eye exam done at least once a year. This is because adults aged 65 or older are at a higher risk for developing a number of eye conditions and diseases that can impair your sight. Many of the conditions that cause vision loss do not have symptoms, therefore it is very important to get your eyes checked so any problems can be detected early! The most common eye problems experienced by seniors include cataracts, diabetes, macular degeneration, glaucoma, presbyopia.

Children Eye Exam

All children under the age of 19 are covered by MSP for their annual eye exam. According to a report, 1 in 5 children have an undetected eye problem. Needless to say, this can be very damaging to the child’s educational development, since 80% of what children learn is through vision. Quite often, children do not realise that there is a problem with their eyesight. Gradually, being unable to read what the teacher writes upon the board can start to cause a decline in learning and they can start falling behind in class, leading to emotional problems and a misdiagnosis with learning problems. This is why it is important to get your kids tested early, so that any potential problems can be identified and acted upon.

Diabetic Eye Exam

MSP covers the cost for your annual diabetic eye exam. No referral needed! Diabetes can affect many parts of the eye. It can cause nearsightedness, farsightedness and premature presbyopia (the inability to focus on close objects). It can also result in cataracts, glaucoma, paralysis of the nerves that control the eye muscles or pupil and decreased corneal sensitivity. The most serious eye problem associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. It can cause the blood vessels in the back of your eye to weaken and swell, resulting in blood leakage into the retina. If left untreated, it can cause blindness. However, there are measures you can take to help keep your eyes healthy such as booking your annual eye exam.

Glaucoma Screening

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in your eye. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60, however when detected in the early stages, glaucoma can often be controlled, preventing severe vision loss and blindness. It’s very important to get glaucoma screening done if you have the following risk factors: age over 60, family history of glaucoma, diabetics, severe nearsightedness, significant eye injury (even if it occurred in childhood)
